The Blackbeard Pirate Festival takes over the Downtown Hampton waterfront each summer, turning the Virginia seaport into 1718 Hampton, the city that outfitted Lt. Robert Maynard's expedition to hunt down Blackbeard. Free and open to the public, it fields more than 200 costumed pirate reenactors, three stages of nautical music, cannon and small-arms demonstrations, a pirate encampment, and its signature waterfront sea-battle reenactments - 'Blackbeard's Last Battle' and 'The Pirates Take Back Hampton' - staged at 2 PM each day, with tall ships towering over privately decorated sail and powerboats. A Blackbeard funeral parade billed as Hampton's Mardi Gras, a Saturday-night all-bands chantey sing and fireworks, period vendors, and children's activities round out a weekend that reached its 25th year in 2026 and is tied to Virginia's maritime heritage programming.

Do I need a costume?
Dressing up is a big part of the day and warmly encouraged, attendees turn out in pirate gear (the festival drew a wave of Our Flag Means Death fans in costume), and period vendors on site can help build or add to a costume and kit. Costumes are optional; plenty of visitors come in regular clothes
