Pyrate Fest turns the Lake Erie resort island of Put-in-Bay into a free, family-friendly pirate village for a late-June weekend, centered on DeRivera Park in the walkable downtown. It opens with a Friday-afternoon 'harbor invasion' and builds through a Pyrate Encampment Marketplace, live cannon and black-powder demonstrations, sword fighting, a Saturday pirate parade, treasure hunts, kids' games, a live mermaid, the Faire Wynds Circus, and a Sunday Antique Car Parade, capped by the 21+ Pyrate Pub Crawl. Costumes are encouraged - pirates, mermaids and buccaneers fill the streets - and reaching the party is half the fun, by ferry from Port Clinton or small plane onto the island.

Practical love and gripes are mostly about the logistics of getting there: the ferry crossing is cheap and quick, downtown is a short walk end to end so a golf cart is optional, but the last ferry off the island gets crowded, so plan your return.

Do I need a costume?
Dressing up is a big part of the fun and warmly encouraged all weekend, but optional, you can come in regular clothes and still enjoy it. Pirate, mermaid, wench and buccaneer attire all fit the immersive downtown atmosphere, and Miller Ferry even offers $1 off the round-trip fare for those who dress as a pirate
