The experience

What's special

The Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous recreates the Rocky Mountain fur-trade rendezvous era of 1825-1840 on the grounds of the Fort Bridger State Historic Site in southwest Wyoming, and is billed on its official site as one of the largest mountain man gatherings in the nation. Held the first weekend of September, it fills the historic site with primitive traders, contests and competitions (primitive archery, black powder rifle and pistol shooting, knife and hawk), kids' games and primitive demonstrations of the fur-trade and colonial eras, with a Primitive Camp and Tin Tipi Village where participants live and dress in authentic pre-1840 style.

What people love

Visitors describe it as a chance to step back into the 1800s: reviewers note being impressed by the history and the sight of hundreds of participants in period clothing, browsing handmade and traditional goods, and taking in demonstrations and dancing at the historic fort. Some long-time attendees feel it has grown more commercial over the years, but people-watching and the living-history atmosphere are recurring draws.

Historical context

The Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous is a living-history event celebrating the Rocky Mountain fur-trade rendezvous era of roughly 1825-1840. The historic fur trade brought Euro-American trappers and traders together with Native nations of the region; the decades that followed the fur-trade era saw the loss of Native lands and ways of life across the American West. The event is held on the Fort Bridger State Historic Site, established on the site of Jim Bridger's trading post and a later frontier Army post.
