The experience

What's special

Frozen Dead Guy Days is a tongue-in-cheek mountain festival built around a Norwegian grandfather frozen since 1989, and the town that throws him a party every spring. Its best-known event is the Coffin Races, where seven-person teams carry handmade coffins through a timed obstacle course, with prizes for best theme, best coffin and best crash and burn. The Kryogenic Karneval adds brain-freeze contests, frozen T-shirt contests, pie throwing and giant games, and there is live music; the 2026 lineup included Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Andy Frasco & The U.N. The 2027 festival runs April 9 to 11 in Estes Park.

How it works

The festival runs Friday to Sunday, with the Coffin Races and Kryogenic Karneval on Saturday and other traditions on Friday and Sunday. Costumes are part of the fun, and coffin teams compete on theme as well as speed. Tickets and the 2027 music lineup have not been released yet; the organizer runs an email list for when tickets go on sale.

Who it suits

It suits costume lovers, families and groups of friends who enjoy a tongue-in-cheek mountain weekend: Saturday's festival is all ages and costumes are part of the fun. The Friday costume ball is 21+, so families will mostly plan around Saturday.

Getting there

How do I get to Frozen Dead Guy Days?

Estes Park is a mountain town reached by road from Denver, and the main Saturday festival is held at the Estes Park Events Complex. In 2026 parking was free in the downtown garage and free shuttles linked the partner hotels, the visitor center, downtown and the Events Complex on Friday and Saturday, and the festival's own Saturday plan is to drive up, park and ride the shuttle. Private ride services can be booked ahead, and the 2027 parking and shuttle details are still to come. The options below cover the drive and the shuttle in more detail.

Where do most people stay?

The festival names a short list of partner hotels in town, and in 2026 each one was a stop on the free festival shuttle, so a night in town means you can go out and get back without driving. Staying also opens up the Friday and Sunday traditions around the Saturday festival, including the bar crawl and costume ball on Friday and the live-band brunch and polar plunge on Sunday. Compare the options below.

What to bring

Frozen Dead Guy Days is mostly outdoors in a mountain town at 7,522 feet in April, so what to bring is about layers, sun and a few clear-bag basics.

Dress for altitude and duskApril brings mild days and freezing nights at this altitude, and the festival's own line is to dress cold and party colder. Bring layers, warm boots, sunglasses, sunscreen and water.
Costume over layersCostumes run through the weekend, from the Saturday costume contest to creative plunge-wear on Sunday, so choose one that fits over or around warm layers.
Snow, rain or shineIn 2026 the festival went on in snow, rain or shine, and only severe weather could bring postponement or cancellation. Pack a hooded waterproof layer instead of counting on a dry Saturday.
A clear bag for your layersIn 2026 the bag rule was a clear bag or a small clutch, plus one sealed or empty water bottle. Choose a clear bag big enough to stash a shed layer and sunscreen as the day warms up.
Full rule

Clear reusable vinyl or PVC bags up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches; small clutch bags about hand-size, up to 4.5 x 6.5 inches; hydration packs only if empty and without pockets; medically necessary and diaper bags need not be clear; one sealed or empty water bottle up to 2 liters; portable chargers allowed. Rules are re-confirmed each year.

No ATMsThere were no ATMs at the festival in 2026, so bring any cash you want before you arrive.

Accessibility & comfort

The organizer does not publish accessibility details. Ask them directly before you travel about step-free access, accessible toilets, seating and anything else you need.
