The experience

What's special

The Louisiana Pirate Festival, long known as Contraband Days, is Lake Charles's oldest civic festival, celebrating the legend of the privateer Jean Lafitte, whose band of buccaneers is said to have hidden treasure along Contraband Bayou. Founded in 1958 and grown from a single day into a roughly two-week celebration, it is a free family event on the Lake Charles Civic Center lakefront that stages a signature pirate 'invasion' by the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, cannon demonstrations, costume contests, carnival rides, food vendors, and live music, with events on both land and water. It has been recognized regionally and nationally, including as a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event.

Weapons policy

Weapons of any kind are on the festival's list of items not to be brought onto the Civic Center grounds; outside alcohol, glass containers, coolers, tents, pets, and private golf carts are also prohibited (alcohol is sold on site to guests 21+)

Joining in

The festival's pirate theme is carried by the Buccaneers of Lake Charles, who elect a 'Jean Lafitte' to lead the buccaneers in a mock landing to 'capture the Mayor and take over the City,' opposed by a costumed 'City Militia' armed with real cannons; costume contests, a children's pirate costume contest and parade, cannon demonstrations, arts and crafts, carnival rides and games round out the program
