The experience

What's special

The Medieval Fair of Norman is a free, three-day medieval fair held every April in Reaves Park, run since 1977 as a program of the University of Oklahoma Outreach. Unlike a Renaissance festival, it is explicitly a medieval fair set in the year 1360 in Avalon, England, with a mission of educational entertainment; the first Friday doubles as a school day drawing as many as 80 school buses. Visitors find more than 200 juried art and craft booths, over 40 food vendors, seven or eight stages of minstrels, dancers, theater, belly dancers, human chess and horseback jousting, live blacksmithing and falconry demonstrations, and interactive quests for children. The festival is billed as the state's largest weekend event and the third largest event in Oklahoma, and admission is free (parking is $10).

What people love

Long-time attendees describe the fair as welcoming and a beloved yearly tradition, praising the people-watching, the free admission, the roaming improv performers, and the many stages of acts. Common gripes are that food and souvenirs are pricey (attendees single out turkey legs approaching $30) and that the jousting involves a lot of waiting for a short burst of action; the biggest recurring theme is the wet, muddy spring weather, which regulars treat as part of the experience.

Last time around

The 50th annual fair ran April 10-12, 2026 at Reaves Park. Community accounts of recent editions emphasize the free, welcoming, people-watching atmosphere and the frequent rain and mud, with organizers keeping the fair open through wet weather by laying straw over the mud.
