The experience

What's special

VikingsCon bills itself as the only dedicated U.S. fan convention for the History Channel show 'Vikings' and, more broadly, Viking history, culture, fantasy and the 'sword-and-shield' genre. Held at the Charles County Fairgrounds in La Plata, Maryland, the two-day event mixes renaissance-faire-style interactive workshops and demos with comic-con staples - celebrity guest panels, autographs and photo ops - plus a vendor Great Hall, music, a Viking Feast, a Ragnarok overnight encampment, and its signature Battle for Kattegat, an immersive foam-combat experience where attendees take the field as Vikings or Saxons.

What people love

Fans of the show enjoy VikingsCon as a rare chance to put on their garb, meet cast and creators, and take part in hands-on Viking combat, and some attendees report simply having a blast. It is, by attendees' own accounts, a smaller convention rather than a massive festival - one past year drew a thin turnout - and there have been gripes about value, particularly a pricey VIP Viking Feast. Cast bookings and guest line-ups can shift, so several attendees suggest waiting to buy if you're coming for one specific guest.

Last time around

The 2025 edition ran in early November at the Charles County Fairgrounds, sold through ShowClix, and was billed as an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience with kids 12 and under free with a paying adult.

Costumes & what to wear

Do I need a costume?

You don't need a costume to attend, but many people turn out in Viking garb and it adds to the fun. If you want to join the Battle for Kattegat, garb ('tunic, chainmaille, leather, or bare chest') is required and modern clothing such as jeans and tennis shoes is not allowed

Costume rules

Costumes are welcome and part of the immersive atmosphere; a cosplay/costume weapons policy bars anything that could seriously hurt someone (e.g. functional firearms). Participants in the 'Battle for Kattegat' combat are required to wear garb, use only foam-latex/foam weapons, and wear team colors (Vikings red/brown/burgundy, Saxon blue/black)

Weapons policy

No weapons that could seriously hurt someone (e.g. functional firearms). In the Battle for Kattegat only foam-latex or foam-injection weapons are used (long sword, shield, axe, spear, bow/arrow); no boffer weapons, and the combat is explicitly not a LARP

Joining in

Beyond the vendor 'Great Hall', programming includes celebrity Q&A panels, autographs and photo ops, workshops and demos, music, a Viking Feast (Berserker VIP add-on), and the interactive Battle for Kattegat, an Immersive Entertainment Experience of foam-weapon Viking-vs-Saxon combat that anyone 16+ can register to join
