West Virginia Renaissance Festival

The West Virginia Renaissance Festival is an intimate, story-driven festival held over four June weekends on Hollow Hills Farm, a working farm in the Greenbrier Valley mountains near Lewisburg. Presented with the Hanlon-Lees Action Theater, it frames each weekend around a theme (Celtic Crossing, Pirates Landing, Vikings Valhalla, Bacchanalia) and a day-long unfolding story that runs from the gate opening to the final joust. Highlights include America's longest-running theatrical jousting show, a birds-of-prey act, a petting farm with free-roaming chickens and goats, over 70 artisans, West Virginia craft beer, wine and mead tastings, and separately ticketed extras like a Pub Crawl and the Essex Quest puzzle trail. Regulars prize its small, welcoming, feels-like-home atmosphere and the beautiful mountain-farm setting.

Attendees are effusive: many call it the best faire they have been to, praising the intimate scale where the same actors and vendors remember you year to year, the top-notch acts (the birds-of-prey show is a repeated favorite), the day-long story arc, and the roaming farm animals that add to the ambience. Google and Facebook ratings sit near the top (about 4.8 on Google, 100% recommend on Facebook). The dominant caveat is the relentless June heat and limited shade - several warn of sun poisoning and urge sunscreen and hydration. Others note it can be pricey, that cell service is poor so cash is essential (ATMs have run dry on busy days), that there is animal manure near the jousting area on the working farm, and that food options can be limited for some dietary needs.

Recent attendees describe one of the better faires they have been to: smaller and less crowded, with actors and vendors who remember returning guests, animals wandering the grounds, strong acts and a moving closing ceremony.
