Esperanza Spalding is an American bassist, singer, and composer born in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, whose music blends jazz with soul, funk, hip-hop, and Brazilian and classical traditions. In 2011 she became the first jazz artist to win the Grammy for Best New Artist, and she later joined the faculty at Harvard University.
