The experience

What's special

All Hallows Fantasy Faire frames itself as a Celtic new-year celebration: a two-day, all-inclusive costume-play faire at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Gold Country each late October, timed to Samhain. Its centerpiece is the Burning of the Harvestman - a fire-show effigy burn after dark on Saturday, when the faire runs later into the night than most - alongside a lineup that has featured touring Celtic and fantasy acts such as electric-harp duos, bagpipe-and-fire bands, and viking-fusion dancers, plus wine tasting, a pumpkin patch, hundreds of craftspeople, and themed costume contests both days. Overnight Saturday camping at the fairgrounds lets visitors stay for the fire and make a weekend of it. The 2026 faire is the 18th annual.

What people love

The faire's after-dark stretch is its calling card - attendees single out the night the Harvestman effigy burns as the day to go - and the overall read from the ren-faire community is a chill, low-pressure event where dressing up is common but optional, with guild encampments offering free sword lessons and kid-friendly axe throwing.

Costumes & what to wear

Do I need a costume?

Costume play is the point of the event, but plenty of visitors come in ordinary clothes and regulars say any ren-faire garb fits despite the Celtic theme. Saturday's costume contest runs themed categories, witches and wizards, nature folk, deities, and warriors, with an anything-goes contest on Sunday, and prizes for adults, teens, and kids

Weapons policy

No real working firearms are allowed

Joining in

Costume contests with themed categories and prizes run both days (sign-up at the event), and guild encampments offer hands-on activities such as free sword lessons and kid-friendly axe throwing
