The experience
What's special
The Heavener Runestone Viking Festival takes its theme from the ground it stands on: Heavener Runestone Park, a 55-acre former Oklahoma state park built around a large sandstone carved with eight runic markings, which the park presents as believed to be a Viking boundary marker from between 600 and 800 AD - though it notes there has been much controversy over the runes' authenticity and origin. Run as a fundraiser by Friends of Heavener Runestone, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has maintained the park since the state era ended, the festival fills the park with Viking reenactors and warriors, live music, Viking-themed artisans, birds of prey, children's activities, a fairy garden, period demonstrations, festival food, and mead. The setting does double duty: over two miles of wooded hiking trails, a seasonal waterfall, a scenic overlook, an amphitheater, and in-park tent and RV camping with free hot showers make it as much a park weekend as a festival day.
Last time around
The 2025 Viking Festival returned to Heavener Runestone Park on October 25-26, 2025, promoted as a weekend of family-friendly fun with Viking reenactors and warriors, Viking-themed artisans and craftspeople, birds of prey, and live entertainment.
Costumes & what to wear
Do I need a costume?
The festival explicitly invites garb of any flavor, medieval, fantasy, Viking, or steampunk, or none at all; visitors are welcome to simply enjoy the atmosphere. Costumed Vikings are part of the event's fabric, and the fantasy side extends to a fairy garden
Joining in
An admission-priced festival day at the park with Viking reenactors and warriors, live music and stage acts, Viking-themed artisans and craftspeople, birds of prey, children's activities, a fairy garden, period demonstrations, festival food, and mead. Vendor and performer calls go out ahead of each edition, and the park recruits volunteers through an application form

How do I get to Heavener Runestone Viking Festival?
Taxi & rideshare 1
Heavener sits in rural southeastern Oklahoma, about 45 miles southwest of Fort Smith Regional via US-59. Uber and Lyft operate at FSM from the departure-level ground transportation area alongside local taxis, but this is a long rural run, confirm a driver will take the trip before relying on it, and treat the return leg as something to pre-arrange, since rideshare coverage around Heavener itself is close to nil. Flying into the bigger Tulsa International instead means a 2.5-hour drive and makes a rental car essential
Book / info →By train
No direct passenger rail to the venue was found. Use the airport transfers or shuttle options above.
By bus
No scheduled intercity bus or public transit route to the venue was found. Use the airport transfers or shuttle options above.
🅿 Parking
On site parking available. Cost Free (no parking fee published). The park's lot sits at the front of the grounds by the campground entrance. On festival days capacity is tight: at the 2024 festival, once online admission sales closed, tickets were sold at a booth at Heavener High School (501 E Ave G) with a shuttle running festivalgoers up to the park, so on a busy festival Saturday, be ready to park in town and ride up
🚙 Car hire
Compare car hire at FSM
A rental car is effectively required here: the park is deep in rural southeastern Oklahoma with no transit, no intercity bus, and near-zero rideshare coverage, and both realistic airports (Fort Smith 50 minutes, Tulsa 2.5 hours) have on-airport rental counters
