The experience

What's special

Playa del Fuego (PDF) is a Mid-Atlantic Regional Burning Man event held on Memorial Day weekend in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, and produced by the volunteer-run FirePony Creative Society. Guided by Burning Man's Ten Principles, it is described as 'an experiment in collaborative community building, featuring art, music, and a culture of play,' where there are no spectators and everyone collaborates to create the event. It began in 1998 when about 20 East Coast residents gathered on the beach of Assateague Island, Maryland; it moved to Flemings Landing, Delaware in 2001 and to its current Tamaqua home in 2018. There is no headline lineup -- the program is participant-created art, theme camps and sound camps -- and the event runs as a strict gift economy with no vendors or cash on site

What people love

Participants describe PDF as a welcoming 'home' with lovely grounds and friendly people, and value its smaller scale, which they say lets attendees build deeper relationships and spend more time with the same community. Regulars note the site has improved markedly since the move to newer land, praise its strong volunteer focus and solid camps, and DJs who have hosted sound camps recount marathon sets and some of 'the best dance parties.'

The ideals

Burners describe the culture through ten principles, written by the community in 2004.

Radical inclusion

Anyone may belong; no prerequisites.

Gifting

Giving freely, no barter, no expectation.

Decommodification

No ads, sponsorship or selling, which makes room for independent art.

Radical self-reliance

Bring everything you need.

Radical self-expression

Offered as a gift, unique to the giver.

Communal effort

We build it together.

Civic responsibility

Organisers answer for public welfare.

Leaving no trace

Everything packed out, to the last sequin.

Participation

Made real by doing, not watching.

Immediacy

No barrier between you and the moment.

Tickets, how they work

Burn tickets do not work like a normal festival. Here is the system, the price detail is in Pricing below.

  1. 1
Limited, and advance-onlyThere are no sales at the gate. No ticket before you go means no entry.
  2. 2
Sold in timed roundsRegister in advance for the main sale, with later releases if earlier rounds sell out.
  3. 3
Often pay-what-you-canMany burns use tiered or donation pricing, with low-income and ticket-aid options.
  4. 4
A vehicle pass may be separateSome burns charge per car on top of the ticket.
  5. 5
Transfers are official-onlyTickets move through the organiser's system, which shuts out scalpers.

Your first burn

What it actually feels like to go for the first time, and how to land softly.

It will feel overwhelming, and that is normal

The scale hits everyone the first time. You cannot see it all, so do not try.

Pace yourself

Water, food, shade and sleep first. Burnout is the classic first-timer mistake.

Say yes, and come ready to give

The best moments are unplanned; accept a gift, join a camp, but bring something to offer back.

It can move you unexpectedly

Many are surprised by the emotion. That is part of it.

How to participate

A burn has no audience. Here is how a first-timer actually takes part.

  1. 1
There are no spectatorsEveryone takes part. Turning up ready to contribute is the whole idea.
  2. 2
Join or build a theme campCamp with a group that offers something back, a bar, a workshop, a stage.
  3. 3
Gift somethingGive freely, no money changes hands. A drink, a skill, a repair, a moment.
  4. 4
Make or help the artVolunteer with an art crew, help build and burn the effigy.
  5. 5
Take a volunteer shiftGreeters, gate, Rangers and Leave-No-Trace crews keep the city running; a shift is how newcomers plug in.
  6. 6
Leave it betterPack out your own litter and pitch in on teardown.

What to wear

By day

  • Loose natural fibres and a wide hat
  • Goggles and a dust mask for whiteouts
  • High-SPF sun cover, the desert is relentless
  • Sturdy closed shoes for hot, sharp ground

After dark

  • Warm layers, nights turn cold fast
  • Lights or EL wire so you are seen
  • Something expressive, costumes are the norm
  • Skip loose glitter and feathers, they become litter

What to bring

Radical self-reliance is literal: come stocked to live the whole event unaided.

Water for the whole event little or nothing is sold on site
Shelter for the weather sun, wind and cold nights
Warm layers even summer and desert burns get cold
Lights or EL wire so you are seen after dark
Gifts to give freely the economy runs on gifting
A litter bag carry out every scrap
Everything for self-reliance plan to need no services
A grey-water and waste plan you pack out what you bring in

At this burn specifically

  • Camping is the event at Playa del Fuego, a Mid-Atlantic Burning Man Regional run by the volunteer-led FirePony Creative Society in Tamaqua, PA.
  • It operates as a gift economy: there are no concession stands, no cash transactions and even bartering is discouraged -- in the organizers' words, 'If you need something, ask for it.
  • If you have something, gift it!' Porta-potties and firewood are provided and included in the ticket price, but there are no garbage cans -- as a Burning Man Principle, Leave No Trace means everyone packs out their own trash.
  • Ice is the one on-site purchase ($3.50 per 7lb bag, credit/debit only, sold at set hours from the Ice Truck or pre-ordered through Peacock;
  • online ice sales close May 18).
  • Participants can settle into Open Camping (secure your own space, no placement needed) or register a Theme Camp for placement on the city map.
Leave no trace. Everything you bring in, you carry out, grey water and every stray sequin included. It is the rule the whole culture is built on.
