The experience
What's special
Transformus is a sanctioned regional Burning Man event in western North Carolina, billed as 'an outdoor camping experience like nothing else' and dedicated to the principles of inclusion, gifting, decommodification, self-reliance, self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy. There are no spectators -- everyone is a participant -- and the temporary city of Mysteria is created for a few days and then vanishes, culminating in a Saturday-night effigy burn and a Temple burn. Unlike a commercial festival there is no lineup, no vendors and nothing for sale; the art, music and experiences are all brought and gifted by attendees
What people love
Attendees describe Transformus as a solid, well-established burn with a warm and creative community and a strong sense of belonging, with several returning visitors calling it a highlight. Newcomers are widely advised to learn the principles (radical self-reliance chief among them) and, if possible, to join a theme camp for a more central and supported first experience. A recurring practical caution is weather -- the western North Carolina setting is prone to rain and mud

What to bring
Radical self-reliance is literal: come stocked to live the whole event unaided.
At this burn specifically
- Camping is the event: Transformus builds a temporary city called Mysteria out of participants' theme camps and art, existing for one long weekend and then vanishing with no trace left behind.
- It is a decommodified, gifting-economy burn with no vendors and no meals, drinks or beer for sale, so participants come self-reliant and bring everything they need.
- Theme camps -- two or more people sharing an interactive offering, from free bars and food to DJ/dance spaces, lounges and workshops -- are the heart of the event and can enter as early as Wednesday (with approval) to set up.
- Amplified-sound rules vary by neighborhood: some (e.g.
- Paradise Plateau, Shangri-la, Valhalla) allow 24-hour sound while others cut off at 11pm or 2am.
- The event has published policies on generators, LNT greywater, fire and flame effects, mutant/art vehicles and plug-and-play camps.
