The season builds through October. The first two weekends belong to pumpkin festivals and the earliest faire weekends, the third to the big parades and the first raves, and the last weekend, Halloween itself, to the music festivals and the Día de Muertos celebrations that carry on into 2 November.
The Halloween rave is now a fixture of the American calendar, and it has split into two schools. The West Coast school is the costumed mega-rave: Escape Halloween fills the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino for two nights with the most elaborate costumes in the country, and Freaky Deaky does the same for Texas. The bass school runs through the Midwest and Mountain West: HEX in Arizona, Haunted Fest in Columbus, Fright Night Massive in Baltimore and Get Freaky in Salt Lake City are dubstep and riddim rooms in costume. Day of the Dead is its own tradition, not Halloween in a different costume. On 1 and 2 November families build ofrendas, altars of photographs, candles, marigolds, sugar skulls and the food the dead loved, and the celebration is about remembering them with music, processions and painted faces rather than frightening anyone. The US has grown a real public circuit of it, from Hollywood Forever Cemetery's evening of altars and mariachi in Los Angeles to the Marigold weekend in Old Town Albuquerque, San Antonio's Muertos Fest at Hemisfair, Austin's Viva la Vida parade, cemetery processions in Ohio and museum festivals across the Midwest. 38 are listed here, nearly all of them free.
Día de Muertos is included here because it falls in the same late-October planning window, but it is not "Mexican Halloween": these events centre remembrance, family and community tradition.
How to be a good guest. Bring a photograph of someone you have lost if the event invites public offerings, do not touch or photograph a family's altar without asking, and treat face paint as a tribute rather than a costume. Children are welcome everywhere on this list.

The big raves sell in tiers from spring and the final tiers usually go in the last two weeks of October; if a listing shows a price it is the current tier. Parades, pumpkin festivals and most Día de Muertos events have no tickets at all. Faire Halloween weekends are cheaper online than at the gate.
Parades welcome anything. Raves usually ban full face masks, weapons and prop weapons, and some ban anything that hides identification at the door. Check the organiser's page the week before; policies change year to year.

FreakNight Festival was a Halloween-season electronic-music event produced by USC Events, long billed as Seattle's biggest Halloween party and staged mainly at the WaMu Theater, with earlier editions at the Tacoma Dome. It fused a twisted big-top circus aesthetic with indoor carnival rides and sideshow performers across house, bass, trance and techno. The most recent edition documented in available sources dates from 2019; no later edition appears under this name.
The official site details an October 26, 29 (Thursday, Sunday) edition at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, MD, and carries a 2023 copyright; no 2026 dates have been announced in available sources.
The festival has a history of multi-year gaps: it debuted in 2012, did not run 2016-2017, was revived by Insomniac in 2018-2019, and has not been held since 2019.
The festival did not take place in 2020 or 2021 (COVID-19), and organizers cancelled the 2022 edition without explanation, following a reported ownership dispute between founder Steve Rehage and Live Nation. No edition has been held since October 2019.
